1. Respect ALL people even if they are not LEAF fans.

2. Carry on discussions in a civilized manner. It is ok to disagree but it is not ok to be nasty and hateful. I do understand the passion behind our love for our team and sometimes it kinda gets a little nasty and I am ok with that as long as it don't get TOO nasty.

3. PLEASE NO LINKS that are not related to hockey. If you would like to share a personal link please feel free to POST IT ON THE MESSAGE BOARD. . . I especially don't want any non-hockey advertising or anything. If you have something for sale or trade that is Maple LEAFS or hockey related post it on the appropriate board.

4. If you have any problems with anyone on the Zone that is sending nasty comments to you personally send an email to MSN about them. I cannot do anything about that. I can ban them from the Zone but that is all. I can't do that if they are not doing anything wrong here. Personal battles are just that ...personal.

5. PLEASE NO POINTLESS BAD-MOUTHING OF THE LEAFS!! You don't have to like them to be on the Zone but you sure better be respectful of them and their fans! GO LEAFS GO!

6. No dating in the zone you can exchange e-mails but if it isnt mutual. Just complain to me I'll bad the member and you can add them to block on your msn messenger or email andwherever else.

Matt anoffensivley inclined player. In three seasons with the OHL's Belleville Bulls, Stajan registered 206 points (76-130-206) in 182 games. A member of Canada's silver medal World Junior Team in 2003, Stajan saw his first professional action in the latter stages of the 2002-03 AHL and NHL seasons.
After getting a taste of the NHL in 2002-03, Stajan made a strong for a roster spot in 2003-04. With a solid training camp and pre-season.He has played over 170 nhl games so far while he and his game are maturing nicley into a top 2 lines player.
Matt is very heady with or without the puck. Has the versatility to line up at all three forward positions. Displays plenty of offensive upside. He has started to fill out his 6'1 frame adding alot of muscle over the 05-06 season. This has made him a lot strongeron the puck.He carrys the puck into the opposition zone like another #14 use too.
His behind the net play is 100% improved from last season, and while he used to get knocked off the puck easily last year he is now a force along the boards and has setup a lot of chances and goals from there. When he's behind the net with the puck, you just feel comfortable that he'll find his wingers for a scoring opportunity.

Selected by Florida Panthers round 3 #70 overall 1999 NHL Entry Draft

When the leafs signed Hagman it immediately addressed team needs. The Leafs have help now in three key areas in which they were most in need:: the penalty kill, the forecheck and team speed.
Niklas is an energetic forward who brings speed, tanacity, grit and scoring touch to our lineup," Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher said. "He's a scoring threat while shorthanded and he uses his speed to score clutch goals." Niklas is a great skater and a tenacious workerand very durable. Excells in a torepedo like forcheking role.Pounces on loose pucks and can use his agility and speed to turn on a dime to get him and the puck away from the attacking team. He gets results but needs to learn to turn his game up in the post season. Played in a winning environment. Reliable player. Mentally tough and doesnt ever get intimidated. Very detailed hockey player and plays on both sides of the rink. Ron wants him to play more than he played in Dallas. Hagman's new contract includes a no-movement clause through June 1, 2009.
Toronto Maple Leafs sign UFA forward Niklas Hagman to a four-year contract worth $12 million

Classic late bloomer with good skating ability, great shot and outlet pass.Shut Down defensive d-man who was one of the top five best defensemen in the Western Conference last year. He played against the best players on every other team. [Leafs' coach] Ron Wilson told me he was always on the ice in San Jose games against Joe Thornton. Same thing with Jarome Iginla in Calgary, or the Sedin twins [Henrik and Daniel] in Vancouver. Quennville said [Finger] was his best defenseman in the last half of the year."
Finger - Showed incredible improvement. Most Eastern teams dont watch Western teams. Lots believed that Scotty Hannan will be their top defensive defenseman in Colorado, but it was Finger who took the spotlight. +22 in the Western conference is quite an accomplishment. Plays hard in front of his own net. Not flasy. Might have overpaid for him but he is a part of their puzzle. One of the most improved defensemen. Has the potential to be a number 3 or 4 defenseman. Quennville had very high praises for Finger.
Toronto signs UFA defenceman Jeff Finger to a 4 yr deal worth $3.5-mil a season

Grabovski. We gave up a 2nd and our 5th rounder from this year, but what we received is someone who has the ability to compete a level higher than any of our current prospects and is projected Top 6 material. We are not rebuilding, we are reloading with players in their 20's that are highly skilled. The general rule is your first round picks should be in your Top 6 Forward/Top 4 Defensemen. Your second and third round picks should be serviceable NHL players with a CHANCE to break into the Top 6/Top 4 and the rest will fight for a roster spot.

* From 1955 to 1957, Smythe turned over most of his authority over day-to-day hockey operations to Hap Day, but remained general manager on paper.[1)** The Leafs did not have an official general manager during the 1957-58 NHL season; Smythe, as chairman of the Silver Seven (a committee overseeing the Leafs' hockey operations), was effectively general manager.

The first GM in franchise history Querrie won two Stanley Cups with the team, in 1917–18 and again in 1921–22.he team was known as the "St. Patrick's." But in 1919, Querrie saw his team post the worst record in franchise history, finishing with a .278 winning percentage. The dismal result was not entirely his fault since he had to sell off most of his star players to fight a legal battle with Toronto Blueshirts owner Eddie Livingston.- 127-133-10 (.488) 2 cups 1918 and again in 1921–22
Conn Smythe - 1927-57
- 774-617-274 (.556) - 7 Stanley Cups (32, 42, 45, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951)
- An avid horse owner, his biggest coup as a GM might have started on the track. In the fall of 1930, he bet a bundle of money on his 100-1 underdog, Rare Jewel, at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack. His horse won the race, and he used the winnings to help buy star defenceman King Clancy from the cash-strapped Ottawa Senators. Two years later, Clancy and the Leafs won the Stanley Cup, Smythe's first as a GM.
Hap Day - 1955-57
- 45-67-28 (.402) - No Stanley Cups
- Though Conn Smythe was the GM on paper between 1955-57, Hap Day was the one doing most of the work. Though he won seven Stanley Cups with the Leafs - one as a player, five as a coach and another as an assistant GM - he didn't last long in the position, and his tenure is punctuated by the manner in which he left. After a lacklustre couple of seasons, Day, who was a partner in Smythe's sand and gravel business, was publicly criticized by Smythe, inciting the future hall-of-famer to resign his post.
Punch Imlach - 1958-69, 1979-81
- 433-359-159 (.547) - 4 Stanley Cups (1962, 1963, 1964, 1967)
- Imlach's tenure with the Leafs created many strong emotions among fans and players alike, both good and not-so-good. But here's something you might not know about his GM prowess: in the 1974 draft, while with the Buffalo Sabres, Imlach selected a little-known centre from Japan's Tokyo Katanas named Taro Tsujimoto - little-known, because he didn't exist. Imlach made him up because he was bored. It took weeks for the NHL to realize it was a hoax, and now official records call the selection an "invalid claim."
Jim Gregory - 1969-79
- 334W-324L-130T (.508)- No Stanley Cups
- An example of what Gregory had to deal with in the Ballard Era: everybody and their mother knew in 1978 that the Leafs' owner wanted a tough guy for the team. Actually, he wanted Dan Maloney. So, Gregory made the obligatory call to Detroit GM Ted Lindsay about Maloney, and the Leafs got what Ballard wanted. They also gave up two first-round picks plus solid winger Errol Thompson in the process. Even though Gregory was working on a shoestring budget, his Leafs still managed to make the playoffs in eight of the 10 seasons he was GM and memorably upset the dynasty-bound New York Islanders in the quarter-finals of the 1978 playoffs.
Gerry McNamara - 1981-1988
- 166W-302L-67T (.355)- No Stanley Cups
- McNamara is best remembered for what he did as a scout for the club. In December 1972, he travelled to Sweden so he could take a look at a goaltender. What he saw was a playmaking, speedy 21-year old defenceman named Börje Salming. He recommended signing the Swedish defenceman, who became one of the most beloved Leafs of all time and essentially paved the way for the European invasion of the NHL. He was also the gm who drafted leaf legend Wendel Clark. But as a GM? He's saddled with the worst winning percentage in Leaf history.
Gord Stellick - 1988-89 - 28-46-6 (.378)- No Stanley Cups
- Stellick is still the youngest GM ever appointed in NHL history. He was hired at the age of 30 but only lasted one season under Ballard before resigning, citing too much interference by the owner. An example: Ballard insisted on a coach who didn't want the job. Leaf great George "Chief" Armstrong, who Stellick hired as a scout, told anyone who would listen that he didn't want the coaching job after John Brophy was fired. He got it anyway and lasted the rest of the season even though he didn't like the job at all. When Stellick wanted another coach for the new season, Ballard refused, and that helped Stellick decide to leave for the Rangers.
Floyd Smith - 1989-1991
- 61W-84L-15T (.421)- No Stanley Cups
- Lasted twice as long as Gord Stellick. In Smith's first season as GM, the Leafs made the playoffs, which was memorable for all the wrong reasons thanks to a Sergio Momesso shot from centre ice that beat Leaf goalie Alan Bester. Next season, with all of Smith's deals, the Leafs dressed 48 players and Smith gave away next year's first round pick to New Jersey in return for Tom Kurvers. The pick turned into Scott Niedermeyer. During Smith's tenure, Harold Ballard passed away, and a bitter fight emerged over control of the team. This fight ultimately paved the way for Smith's dismissal and the arrival of Cliff Fletcher.
Cliff Fletcher - 1991-1997, 2008
- 226W-219L-58T-8OT (.508) - No Stanley Cups
- Widely regarded as the man responsible for turning the club around after the dark days of the 1980s and best remembered for what Leaf fans now call "The Trade." On Jan. 2, 1992, Fletcher sent Gary Leeman, Michel Petit, Alexander Godynyuk, Craig Berube and Jeff Reese to Calgary for Jamie Macoun, Rick Wamsley, Kent Manderville, Ric Nattress and Doug Gilmour. All five players, especially Gilmour, became essential to the Leaf resurgence of the early 1990s. The 10-player swap remains one of the most lopsided deals in league history.
Ken Dryden - 1997-1999 - 75W-73L-16T (.507)- No Stanley Cups
- Though the GM on paper, Dryden gave a lot of managerial duties to assistant GM Mike Smith while he took care of his responsibilities as president. But he did have a bit of a hand in one deal if reports are accurate. Legend has it that before the 1998-99 season, Dryden was in a convenience store in the west end of Toronto getting some ice cream when he ran into player agent Don Meehan. The two chatted for a while, and Dryden walked out of the store thinking he had a chance to add a major piece to his roster puzzle: Curtis Joseph. The netminder signed with the Leafs later that summer, and that season he led them to an appearance in the conference final.
Pat Quinn - 1999-2003
- 169W-109L-35T-15OT (.608) - No Stanley Cups
- Quinn has the best record of any Leaf GM. While he held the managing spot for the team, the Leafs made the playoffs every year and only failed to make it out of the first round once, in 2003. But they never made it to the Cup finals, losing out in 1999 while he was a coach and again in 2002 when he was coaching and managing the team. His most notable acquisitions include fan-favorites Gary Roberts and Darcy Tucker, plus Alexander Mogilny and Eddie Belfour, among others.
John Ferguson Jr. - 2003-08
- 145W-110L-10T-30OT (.569) - No Stanley Cups
- Every single facet of his tenure has been scrutinized backwards and forwards, but here's something that might surprise you: through all the pressure, controversy and ridicule thrown at him, JFJ still managed to post the second-best record as a general manager in Leaf history, behind Pat Quinn.

Ron Wilson

Ron Wilson; Coach
Quote:
-As a coach, Wilson is well-known for integrating technology into his coaching plans. During his stint with the Washington Capitals, he and assistant coach's introduced personal computers into the team's strategy planning and burned DVDs of Capitals games for the team to review. In his stint with the San Jose Sharks, Wilson introduced a tablet PC to be used in the team bench by himself or his assistants to instantly plan out strategies and review plays-Wilson was named the coach of the U.S. national team at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, where he led the Americans to the tournament championship-He is the 11th coach in the history of the NHL to reach 500 victories. Wilson is 8th on the all-time list of the number of games coached, and is ranked third amongst the active coaching list-Wilson was given the role of assistant coach for the NHL All-Star Game for the Western Conference team as the coach of the SJ Sharks for the 2007-08 NHL season.

Kyle Wellwood

Kyle Wellwood, C
Quote:
Kyle Wellwood was born May 16, 1983 in Windsor, Ontario. The sixth choice, 134th overall selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Wellwood is a graduate of the OHL.
Finished 4th in ahl scoring in 04-05. Is capable of highlight reel efforts. He is a energetic playmaker with a low center of gravity and he has lighting quick hands. He is sneaky on his feet and has aknack for creating space by holding defensers at bay with his stick hand trickery. Kyle effortlessly shifts the puck around at top speed and sports nice clean release which makes it hard to sport the release point. -mckeens 05-06
. . . ........ ...... . ...... . . ... .. . . . . . . . . . . ."Son of mess" sees the ice better than most players and has very deft touch whenever handling the puck. Has proven to be an accomplished playmaker at every level. His skating has improved to the point where he is one of the faster players on the leafs while handling the puckAn offensively gifted forward, Wellwood played four seasons in the OHL (99-2003) with stops in Belleville and Kitchener registering 352 points (12-232-352) and was an OHL First Team All-Star in 2001 before making his professional debut during the 2003-04 season. A member of Canada's Silver Medal World Junior team in 2002, Wellwood spent the majority of the 2003-04 season with the AHLs St. John's Maple Leafs, registering 55 points (20-35-55) in 76 games, while making his NHL debut with the parent club early in the new year. legends of hockey05-06 is Wellwoods coming out season. Kyle has been one of the top rookies of the 05-6 NHL season. He's been quite good on the backcheck, and solid in the corners in his own end considering his size. Welly makes plays that havent done by anyone in a leaf uniform in years. He is capable of berezin like rushes, complete with passing skills, and another nice element of his game is he has a creativness with the puck that is simular to Dougie Gilmours killer playmaking ability.Next season is going to be much like his second season in the OHL, and the AHL, and he's and the other young talented Leafs are going to be a huge part of this team next season.

Reasons Why Wellwood Won't Make NHL (Funny read after he has made the nhl)
I've taken all of these from actual posts at HF. Feel free to add your own reason why Wellwood won't play in the NHL. Be as creative as possible.- Too small- Can't skate- No defensive skills- Not gritty enough- Passed over 133 times in his draft year- He's a perimeter player- Not strong enough - Not a good enough goal scorer- Game relies on time and space that he won't get in the NHL- Purely a setup guy who needs to play with great scorers to have success- Won't be able to play a top 2 line role, not suited for the 3rd or 4th line- Not good enough for NHL style game, game is more suited for the AHL- Many high scoring Junior players haven't made the NHL- Smaller, skilled players almost never make the NHL- Simply taking advantage of AHL calibre defencemenAdded:- Not pretty enough- Too clean shaven- He's a Leaf- Too much body weight- Lacks work ethic- Is afraid of being hit- Doesn't have "the tools"- Weak on his skates- - Doesn't have grit like Corey Locke - Politics- His 0 PIM season in junior - He practiced with Kaberle one time- He is uncontrollably destined to follow in the footsteps of ______ _______ (insert career minor leaguer here)- Mess has put too much pressure on him- Doesn't have good enough reach- Odds are stacked against him

Darcy Tucker

Darcy is a under sized pest who plays at full speed all the time.He brings a little bit of everything to the playing ice arena. He can kill penalties and can contribute to the powerplay.Always comes to play and forechecks very well. Provides an energy boost for his team every shift and has a decent set of hands around the net. Is absolutely fearless on the ice.
The industrious forward was chosen 151st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. After scoring 93 points in 74 games he won the AHL Rookie award the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award.
Tucker went on to play parts of three seasons in Montreal before being dealt to the Tampa Bay in January 1998. Upon his arrival with the Bolts, Tucker went on to score 21 goals during the 1998-99 season and played the better part of the 1999-00 season before being dealt to the Maple Leafs in the latter stages of the season.
During the 2001-02 Darcy had a career high in goals with 24 and points with 59 and continued to be one of the Leafs hardest workers. 05-06 was Darcy's finest season he was a jewell in a season that was torpedoed in january by a month and a half long losing streak. Tucker is partially responsable for the Leafs late season drive for the playoffs. He is maturing into a leader on our maple leafs team. He hates to loose and wants to leave his mark with the leafs.Only a sucessful long playoff drive into June will satisfy this great maple leaf and the fans will continue to love him even if he doesnt deliver what we all covet the most in the middle of June.

Quote:
Bryan McCabe Is extremely aggressive in the defensive zone. Has a good shot from the point. Knows when to pinch in from the back end. Can log an abundance of minutes and feasts on the power play. He is physical on the ice loves to throw his trade mark can opener check at the oppostion. He has good offensive abilities. He has become a great triggerman on the power play where he can use his booming accurate low shot. He, like his defensive pairing partner tomas kaberle, can make the first pass out of the zone and he is blessed with above average wheels.Caber was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round, 40th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft He won two World Junior Championship gold medals for Canada. He has also represented Canada at the 97 and 1998 World Championships.McCabe played just two-and-a-half years with New York, and he became the team's captain for a season. He, Todd Bertuzzi weretraded by the NYI in 1998 to Vancouver. McCabe's stay on the Canadian west coast was short-lived as he was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks which in turn was even shorter. After just one year in the Windy City, McCabe was sent to the Maple Leafs for Alexander Karpovtsev and Vladimir Gusev in October, 2000.In the 2001 playoffs McCabe played the finest hockey of his young NHL career. "It was a lot of fun," said McCabe who was making his first appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. "I'm not satisfied though. It was tough losing in the second round." After a disappointing second round loss in the 2001 playoffs, McCabe and the Leafs looked to rebound in 2001-02. Having posted a career high in points with 28 the previous year, McCabe broke out offensively in 2001-02 scoring 17 goals and 43 points and was instrumental in Toronto's run to the Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes. Although Toronto lost the series in six games to the upstart Hurricanes, the team fought to the bitter end, tying the game in the dying seconds before losing in overtime.-Legends of HockeyMcCabe's totals dipped in 2002-03. Coming off a sub-par year offensively, McCabe rebounded in 2003-04, registering a career high 53 points (16-37-53). His o5-06 season started off great. There was Noris buzz surround Bryans early heroic play as he and the leafs played above average hockey. Bryan lead the league defenseman in points for much of the 05-06 season. He was named to the Canadian Olympic squad. He was on pace to break Ian Turnbulls record for points by a defenseman but Bryans offensive tallies started to slow down after a mid season groin injury but despite that he still had career highs in all offensive categories. Leafs have not locked up the offensively gifted d-man and could face loosing him because of cap space and free agent market demands. NHL Second All-Star Team 2004

Tomas Kaberle

Tomas Kaberle, D
Quote:
At age 18 years Tomas Kaberle was drafted 204th overall in 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.Tomas has become an all round star on the blue line kabs has superior hockey sense and this allows him to play with a healthy self-confidence and collects points because he possesses tremendous hockey smarts and has the ability to find his teammates on the ice. A fluid elegant swift skater, he can wheel with the puck and loves to join the attack. Is an excellent accurate passer.Tomas Kaberle provides constant support for his team while becoming one of the top defencemen in the league. By end of the 05-06 season he will be top 5 offensive defensman in toronto franchise history. In September 1998 he garnered the attention of coach Pat Quinn and he was to stay with the team on a trial basis. He could not believe the news. And Pat Quinn did not leave him on the bench, sending him out onto the ice at every opportunity. It was a chance for Kaberle to refine his game. Kaberle played well and with time, he got more daring. But the first season was not easy. He went through a crisis and suffered from fatigue. While he was taking a rest from the game, it began to look as if he might never see Stanley Cup playoff action. Ultimately this move, however, proved to be the right one. Kaberle, rested up and anxious to get back in the game, appeared in the Stanley Cup playoffs after all and played brilliantly. The Toronto Maple Leafs fought their way to the semi-finals where they were eliminated by the Buffalo Sabres. From the start of the 1999-2000 season, Tomas Kaberle provided constant support for his team. He had acquired a healthy self-confidence and started collecting points. Though, like most defenceman, he earned his points mainly from passes, he even started scoring and is on his way to becoming one of the top offensive defencemen in the league.A member of the Czech Republic's Olympic Team in 2002, Kaberle would miss 13 games during the 2001-02 regular season before helping the Leafs reach the Eastern Conference Final against the surprising Carolina Hurricanes. In 2002-03 Kaberle suited up for all 82 games, establishing career highs in goals (11) and points (47).In 2005-06, Kaberle played his 500th NHL game and with 290 pts he will surpass the 300-point plateau in 06-07Aside from his Olympic experience in 2002, Kaberle reprsented his homeland at the 98 World Junior Championships, the 03 and 2005 World Championships and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Legends of HockeyIn 06 kabs won a bronze Olympic Hockey medal for the Czech Republic. He also has set a career high for assist and points so far in the 05-06 campaign. He is teamed up with defensive partner Bryan MacCabe to form a formidable defensive pairing. Caber and Kabs are both having the best seasons of their careers they play against the other teams top players while loging copious amounts of ice time. Kaberle signed a 5 yr deal that will see him become one of Torontos All time Greats.
Currently Kabs is on the top of his game becoming a top 10 defenseman last season and he has even gotten better this season. He is an artist on skates who creates long great smooth passes. The way he avoids forecheckers and dekes out players like it's nothing coming out of his own zone is amazing. He has become a franchise defenceman that teams build championships around.Tomas Kaberle Defense -Left WingBorn Mar 2 1978 -- Rakovnik, Czech Height 6.01 -- Weight 198 -- Shoots L Selected by Toronto Maple Leafs round 8 #204 overall 1996 NHL Entry Draft

CUJO

#31 Curtis Joseph
Born Apr 29 1967 -- Keswick, ONT Height 5.11 -- Weight 188 -- Shoots L
One of hockey's nicest people was a weird goalie to watch. Curtis Joseph guessed a lot, stayed deep in his net and handled the puck like it was a live grenade. Furthermore, he would have to turn his stick around to handle the puck and developed an "Alley Oop" of a breakout pass. Curtis was a workhorse with boundless durability. He fluctuated between stand-up and butterfly.Cujo had lightining-quick reflexes using his hands and legs equally well to stop the puck. CUJO's anticipation was peerless. He was adept at getting down low and following the puck throw screens and on deflections. Joseph always made the key save in tight games, he had good puckhandling ability and he covered the angles well. When he gets into the zone his is virtually unbeatable because of his competitive fire that never burns out or gives up he just never believed he's beaten.Even at age 41 this fire within CUJO burns so hot that the flames radiate blue n white.
This arrangement is likely to extend beyond the one-season Joseph has signed to serve as back-up to Vesa Toskala. It could well evolve into a long-term relationship, in which Cujo works with the young goalies in the Leafs' system, and acts as an advisor to the general manager. But, that's obviously pending the approval of the full-time GM that succeeds Fletcher

Joseph, 41, spent four seasons with the Maple Leafs from 1998 to 2002 after arriving as a free agent from Edmonton. In between stints with the Leafs, the veteran netminder played with Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.
"Curtis will provide outstanding support to Vesa Toskala this season," said interim GM Cliff Fletcher in a statement. "He had tremendous success playing in Toronto in years past and we expect him to be a stabilizing influence for our team, both on and off the ice. We are really excited to have him back in our team's colours."
In nine games with the Flames last season, Joseph went 3-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. The veteran goalie has appeared in 922 NHL games for St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.

Nick Antropov

The Toronto Maple Leafs surprised many hockey observers when they drafted big center Nik Antropov tenth overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Though NHL Central Scouting had him pegged as the 17th best European available, the Leafs made him the second European drafted and made it quite clear they felt they'd secured the sleeper of the draft.
Nik can line up at all three forward positions. Plays with poise and patience. Owns good vision and two-way smarts. He has good hands when he is playing a power game. He is most effective when he is playing with urgency. If Antropov added that fighting ability to his games, he could become a feared competitor. A guy like Roberts wasn't just feared for his hard hitting style, he'd fight you too if he had too.
Often teamed up with linemate Alexei Ponikarovsky on the twin towers line ."They were just big," said Maurice. "Those two guys with their size and their reach, they're just special."
Antropov, a towering 6'5 forward, hails from Kazakhstan, a region that is not often heavily scouted. Though the Maple Leafs drew criticism for the first round gamble, many critics were quickly silenced when after just two games in the minors Antropov was called up by the Maple Leafs --- and stayed with them for the full campaign.
Antropov made an immediate impression durie his rookie season, accumulating30 points as a rookie. However, his rookie season ended on a sour note, when he blew out his knee in a playoff game against the Ottawa Senators.
During his second season Antropov's totals dipped when he scored just six goals and 17 points, though he was recovering from the knee surgery. In order to regain some conditionning, Antropov was assigned to St. John's. Once in St. John's, Antropov regained his confidence and began to score at an impressive clip posting 35 points in 34 games. However, bad luck struck again and once again, Antropov suffered a season-ending knee injury.
As the 2002-03 season began, many wondered what Antropov's future would hold. Early indications dictated how the hulking forward's season would go, as Antropov utilized his size and strength in the corners to create room for himself and his fellow linemates and thus established personal bests in goals (16), assists (29) and points (45).

Leaf Prospects

2005 Draft
With their first-round selection of Rask, The Leafsdrafted the top-ranked European goaltender by NHL Central Scouting. He spent last season in his native Finland with the Ilves Juniors team, where he had a 1.86 goals-against average and .935 save percentage in 26 games. Rask has size at six foot two and 183 pounds, and is known for his good glove, quick reflexes and butterfly style. He played for Finland at the last world junior hockey championship and his country's under-18 squad.
''We project him to be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL - down the road,'' Ferguson said.
Rask didn't make the trip to Ottawa's Westin Hotel for draft day, but instead watched the proceedings on the Internet at his girlfriend's apartment in Finland. He knows it could be awhile before he's ready for the top level.
''Maybe two, three years, four years,'' Rask said. ''Whatever it takes.''
1. Tuukka Rask/G-L — Ilves. 6-2/173. 10 MAR 87.
Tremendously competitive battler plays with a ton of confidence and swagger. Great tools: size, flexibility, quick glove, great lateral movement, and calm under pressure. Will become another in the line of big-time Finnish netminders. A thin butterfly goalie, Rask gets up and down quickly and has very fast legs. Has excellent rebound control and amazingly soft pads. Manages to stay square even when sliding across crease on knees and likes to challenge shooters. Doesn’t get flustered with traffic in front. Handles the puck well and likes to try for the long pass.Has star potential.Tuukka Rask We've been huge fans and still love him, having him at No. 5 overall. http://www.redlinereport.com

The latest goaltending gem emanating from Finland, Rask is trying to follow in the footsteps of Kari Lehtonen and Hannu Toivonen; saw a little action in the SM-Liiga as a 17-year-old this year, and dominated the junior league for Ilves Tampere (26 GP, 2 SO, 1.86 GAA, .935 Sv%); was more impressive at the 2005 WJC last December/January than at the 2005 World U-18 tournament in April; is expected to take over as Ilves' No. 1 goaltender in the SM-Liiga in 2005-06; sound positional skills and a projectable frame are Rask's best assets between http://tsf.waymoresports.thestar.com/thestar/hockey/extras.cgi?2005-draft-prospect-profiles

The Leafs also selected defenceman Phil Oreskovic of the OHL's Brampton Battalion with the 82nd overall pick. Toronto selected forwards with its two other picks, taking American Alex Berry of the Empire Junior Hockey League's Junior Bruins 153rd overall and Johan Dahlberg, who played for the Modo Juniors in his native Sweden last season, at No. 173.
Oreskovic lands with LeafsJuly 30, 2005 BRAMPTON, Ont. - Brampton Battalion defenceman Phil Oreskovic was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round of the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft on Saturday at Ottawa.Oreskovic, who was the 82nd overall selection, came into the draft rated 136th among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s final rankings. Oreskovic had been ranked 183rd by Central Scouting in January.“It’s a tremendous feeling,” said Oreskovic, who was following the draft at his Brampton home.“I was just hoping to get drafted, but once I got the call and I was told I was going to the Leafs it was really overwhelming. It was pretty nerve-wracking waiting to see my name come up.”Oreskovic met with the Leafs in June at the Air Canada Centre.“I knew the Leafs were interested in me. We had a really good meeting. They made me feel very comfortable. I am sure there are a lot of things they would like me to improve and hopefully I can bring what they want to the table. The 18-year-old Oreskovic was the Battalion’s first round pick in the 2003 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. The six-foot-three, 217-pound Oreskovic had a goal and six assists for seven points in 61 games last season. He led the Troops with 147 penalty minutes.

McKeen's Draft Awards Strongest Player: Phil Oreskovic The reviews on his effort and consistency are mixed but this kid is built like a brick .. firm and sturdy on his feet - guys just bounce off him at open ice.

he's a solid dfensemen who needs to work on his skating, his style of play is very similar to former Brampton Battalion Jay Harrison, But Phil is tougher and is a little better skater. He needs to work on his skating and improve his positioning. If he can put it together he'll be a great stay at home dmen in the future. He could be a steal!!!

6’2 winger Johan Dahlberg is the toughest and most physical Swedish forward eligible to get drafted. The hard-hitting MODO prospect is known for his hot temper and could be a successful agitator/role player in the making. Future Even though Dahlberg, a rather safe pick and an outside candidate to be drafted during the first day of the draft, will likely never become an offensive star, he is a decent goal scorer and can chip in offensively though is not the best of stickhandlers http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospect/johan_dahlberg

Justin Pogge with the 90th overall pick.He had a 2.83 goals-against average in 44 games with the WHL team this past season.Central Scouting had Pogge rated eighth among North American goaltenders113. TORONTO (FROM EDM/NYR)-- ROMAN KUKUMBERG, RW, TRENCIN 157. TORONTO -- DIMITRI VOROBIEV, D, TOGLIATTI 6'1 211
Vorobiev does everything well, and has made a solid mark in the Lada hockey program. Some scouts are concerned that he has no particular stand-out skills, although there are no stand-out weaknesses either. A solid skater who is already a solid 210 lbs, Vorobiev has the strength and balance to defend against NHL-size opposition already.Future Vorobiev will stay where he is for now, and should see his ice time increase next season. Has a shot to represent Russia at the 2005 WJC. He looks like he has a shot to play in the NHL, but probably as a depth defenseman at this point, and a few years down the road 187. TORONTO -- ROBERT EARL, LW, UNIV. OF WISCONSIN
Earl is a tremendously gifted offensive player who is exciting watch. He is an excellent skater with explosive speed. He’s a difficult player to contain because of his great ability to move not only through traffic but also around opposing defenders. He plays with intensity and will get involved in the physical aspects of the game. His play around the net is quite good. He will drive to the net as well as create chaos around it. He also possesses great playmaking skills. He sees the ice well and has good anticipation. He possesses a quick release and has no trouble finding the net. He has also shown a knack for scoring timely goals as well. One area of improvement for Earl is his size. At 185 lbs. he could stand to bulk up more.Future -The undersized speedster will be back at Wisconsin for his junior season in 2005-06. He needs to continue to round out his game, and not be so reliant on his speed to get by. This youngster is brimming with confidence, and has the potential to make a lot of noise offensively at Wisconsin next season. 220. TORONTO -- MAXIM SEMENOV, D, TOGLIATTI 252. - Brendan Bell (D)- ALEX BERRY F- Carlo Colaiacovo (D)- JOHAN DAHLBERG. W 6'2 192
6’2 winger Johan Dahlberg is the toughest and most physical Swedish forward eligible to get drafted. The hard-hitting MODO prospect is known for his hot temper and could be a successful agitator/role player in the making.Future Even though he is, a rather safe pick, will likely never become an offensive star, he is a decent goal scorer and can chip in offensively though is not the best of stickhandlers - Dominic D'Amour (D)-John Doherty (D)
Jeremy Williams Position: RW Shoots: Right 5-11 184 lbs Birthdate: 1984-01-26 7th Round, 220th Overall in 2003 NHL Entry Draft
gifted offensive player, is an adept playmaker who can also finish. Williams has an edge to his game, and although he's slight in build, does not back down from larger defenders. Drafted as a 19-yr-old, there are some concerns that Williams size and defensive play will hold him back at the professional levels. His skating has really improved in the last two years, but there is always room for improvement in that area. has really improved his acceleration and top-end speed in recent years, which has helped him offensively.Future He should be ready for the jump to the NHL whenever the call comes.

Hall of Leafs

Syl Apps1936-43, 1945-48 Apps was the first winner of the Calder Trophy, given to rookie of the year. His 10 seasons were interrupted by World War II, but they included three Stanley Cups. He had 432 points in 423 games. Plus, Apps was great inspirational leader and a great athlete -- he was a national champion and Olympic pole vaulter.
Dave Keon1960-75 Not only was Keon a relentless checking center, he produced these statistics: In 1,062 regular-season games in 14 seasons with the Leafs, he had 858 points (365 goals, 493 assists) while picking up only 75 penalty minutes. He won four Stanley Cups, the Calder Trophy, two Lady Byng trophies and a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Ted 'Teeder' Kennedy1942-55, 1956-57 Tenacity and competitive spirit made up for Kennedy's lack of pure skills, and he became an outstanding leader. Kennedy played on five Cup teams and was league MVP in his final season. He had a scoring touch, and he was among the game's greatest faceoff men.
Joe Primeau1927-36 Primeau centered the Kid Line, with Charlie Conacher and Harvey Jackson on the wings. He was a smooth playmaker, a tenacious checker and penalty killer and earned the nickname "Gentleman Joe" for his clean play.
Bob Pulford1956-70 In the late '50s and '60s, the popular phrase was, "As Pulford goes, so go the Leafs." In 14 seasons, he made his mark as "the hockey player's hockey player" -- a hard-working, two-way center who was a key to the Leafs' four Cups in the 1960s.
Darryl Sittler1970-82 No. 1 in goals (389), second in assists (527) and the first Leaf to score more than 100 points in a season. He was good for more than a point per game -- 916 in 844 games. They came in bunches. On February 7, 1976, against Boston, Sittler scored six goals and assisted on four others.
Norm Ullman1967-75 The best center who ever played for Punch Imlach, Ullman shunned the limelight but made a name for himself as a bull terrier on skates. He was highly underrated, because he was an excellent stickhandler, strong skater and durable performer. His misfortune was to arrive after the Leafs' dynasty of the 1960s.

Irvine 'Ace' Bailey1926-34 Bailey's career was cut short by a skull fracture that nearly took his life, but in 7 1/2 seasons he was the team's outstanding scorer and defensive star. He was the cornerstone of the team when it became the Maple Leafs, and he played on one Cup winner.
Charlie Conacher1929-38 Conacher was a great right winger with a bullet shot. While a member of the renowned Kid Line, he won two scoring titles and was the NHL's top goal scorer five times. Frank Mahovlich1956-68 Beginning with his Rookie of the Year award, "the Big M" was adept at collecting awards -- four Cups with the Leafs, numerous All-Star selections and a terrific 48-goal campaign in 1960-61. Harvey 'Busher' Jackson1929-39 Jackson was a three-time scoring king and a Cup winner in 1931-32. He also was a first-team All-Star four times. Jackson holds the distinction of playing on two of the Leafs' greatest lines -- the Kid Line with Charlie Conacher and Joe Primeau, and with Syl Apps and Gord Drillon.
Dave 'Sweeney' Schriner1939-43, 1944-46 Russian-born players aren't new; Schriner was born in Russia in 1911 and moved to Canada as a child. He was acquired in trade for five players, and proved his worth by playing on two Stanley Cup winners.
Eddie Shack1960-67, 1973-75 One night he leveled two Rangers, earning the handle "Clear the Track" Shack. A member of the great Leafs teams of the '60s, he had some memorable battles with Montreal's Henri Richard. He once told the fuming Richard: "Henri, don't get so upset. It's not your fault God gave all the hockey talent to your brother."
