#31 Curtis Joseph
Born Apr 29 1967 -- Keswick, ONT Height 5.11 -- Weight 188 -- Shoots L
One of hockey's nicest people was a weird goalie to watch. Curtis Joseph guessed a lot, stayed deep in his net and handled the puck like it was a live grenade. Furthermore, he would have to turn his stick around to handle the puck and developed an "Alley Oop" of a breakout pass. Curtis was a workhorse with boundless durability. He fluctuated between stand-up and butterfly.Cujo had lightining-quick reflexes using his hands and legs equally well to stop the puck. CUJO's anticipation was peerless. He was adept at getting down low and following the puck throw screens and on deflections. Joseph always made the key save in tight games, he had good puckhandling ability and he covered the angles well. When he gets into the zone his is virtually unbeatable because of his competitive fire that never burns out or gives up he just never believed he's beaten.Even at age 41 this fire within CUJO burns so hot that the flames radiate blue n white.
This arrangement is likely to extend beyond the one-season Joseph has signed to serve as back-up to Vesa Toskala. It could well evolve into a long-term relationship, in which Cujo works with the young goalies in the Leafs' system, and acts as an advisor to the general manager. But, that's obviously pending the approval of the full-time GM that succeeds Fletcher
Joseph, 41, spent four seasons with the Maple Leafs from 1998 to 2002 after arriving as a free agent from Edmonton. In between stints with the Leafs, the veteran netminder played with Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.
"Curtis will provide outstanding support to Vesa Toskala this season," said interim GM Cliff Fletcher in a statement. "He had tremendous success playing in Toronto in years past and we expect him to be a stabilizing influence for our team, both on and off the ice. We are really excited to have him back in our team's colours."
In nine games with the Flames last season, Joseph went 3-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. The veteran goalie has appeared in 922 NHL games for St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit, Phoenix and Calgary.
