Pat Quinn

Quote:

As head coach of the Flyers he lead them too two successful seasons in first and second place in the Campbell Conference. The Flyers recorded an NHL record 35 game winning streak under Quinn, who went on to sign a five-year contract with the team in 1981. But to the amazement of most Flyers fans, he was fired in just the second year of the deal. Quinn responded by enrolling in law school, continuing to draw his Flyers paycheck and keeping abreast of NHL activity by watching games on TV.

Quinns style of coaching emphasising offense, speed, puck-movement, and puck possession.

In 79-80 Pat coached the Flyers to the longest winning streak in professional sports 25 Wins - 10 Ties - 0 Losses.

After being let go from the Flyers, Quinn wasn't finished with controversy in the coaching department. In 1987, back in the coaching game with the Los Angeles Kings, Quinn was suspended from the NHL for several months because he had accepted a $100,000 signing bonus to become president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks while still under contract with L.A. The Canucks were also fined by league president John Ziegler for paying Quinn the bonus, as were the Kings for not reporting the deal promptly.

Nevertheless, Quinn coached 11 seasons in Vancouver, leading the team to a narrow loss to the New York Rangers in a seven-game Stanley Cup finals in 1994 before coming back to the Maple Leafs for the 1998-99 season. He quickly made his presence felt, telling fans and reporters he had definite plans for his new team, one that had been a little flat in the goal-scoring department in past years.

Vancouver was playing that "free-flowing" hockey out West and everyone marvelled at how it contrasted with the trap-happy hockey being played in the East? As Marc Crawford once said, "That's just Pat Quinn hockey".

Quinn certainly became a big hit in his early days with the team he once played with, leading them to their first playoff appearance since 1996 and their third trip to the conference finals in the 1990s. Quinn also led the team to a club-record 45 wins. He finished the season as runner-up for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year and during the off-season was named general manager of the Leafs as well. A short time later, he was named coach of Canada's Olympic entry for Salt Lake City in 2002. He was named coach of Team Canada for the 2006 Turin Olympics

05-06 was the 7th season where the leafs were coached by Pat. The vultures had started to circle as Pat and the Leafs finally looked like they may be ready to retire as a non contending team. The Leafs of 05-06 were hand cuffed by bad Free Agent acqusitions and MSLE politics. Luckily after Allison Kahanov and Belfour went on the Injured reserve list something happened to the new leafs team. They started to win after speedy youngsters were given more playing time. Under Pats toutiledge the leafs surged at the end of the season getting 20 of a possible 22 points going down the stretch but missed the playoffs.

On black thursday Apr 20th 2006 Pat was relieved of his coaching duties.

Here is Pats record with Toronto. It is worth noting prior to the 05-06 campaign Quinn hadn't coached a non-playoff entry since 1987 when he was behind the Los Angeles Kings' bench.

Paul Maurice (born ca. 1967 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) is a professional hockey coach. He is currently the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

Paul MauriceIn 1985, Paul played defence for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. He was struck in the eye by a puck, which had ricocheted off his stick, during a charity hockey game in which he was participating. He still has a blind spot and suffers fuzziness on the right side of his field of vision. When goalie Pat Jablonski was sent down by the St. Louis Blues, the Windsor Spitfires were therefore in excess number of players. At this point he was given the option by team owner Peter Karmanos to be traded or step behind the bench. He thus began his coaching career with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings (a team Karmanos operated) of the OHL from 1993 to 1995, leading the team to the J. Ross Robertson Cup and a second place finish in Memorial Cup in 1995.

He was then hired to coach the Hartford Whalers (later the Carolina Hurricanes) of the NHL in 1995, at the remarkably young age of 28. Throughout much of his tenure, he was the youngest active coach in the NHL. The high point of his NHL career came in the 2001-02 NHL season, when the Hurricanes reached the Stanley Cup finals, losing to the Detroit Red Wings. After coaching 604 regular season games he was fired by the Hurricanes in 2003, after the team started the first 20 games 8-12.

On June 24, 2005 he was hired to coach the Toronto Marlies, after the team had relocated from St. John's, Newfoundland. In the 2005-06 season, the Marlies qualified for fourth playoff spot in their division. They were subsequently eliminated by the Grand Rapids Griffins in the first round.

On May 12, 2006, The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Paul Maurice as the head coach of the team starting in the 2006-07 NHL season, replacing former head coach Pat Quinn, who was fired on April 20, 2006.

After 2 straight seasons out of the playoffs Maurice was released of his duties as Head Coach by Leafs interm GM Cliff Fletcher on May 7 2008.

The main reasons for the firing to give Paul a chance to find new employment. The leafs are in a transitional period and a new GM will most lilley wnat to hirehis own coach. Also the Leafs have now missed the playoffs for the third year in a row, something that hasn’t happened since 1928.

He incorporates many ideas into his gameplay such as heart monitors on the benches. He favours short (30 second) shifts over longer ones.
Maurice's 2-man forecheck system, a key to Offensive Success..
Has anybody not been impressed with Maurice's 2 man forecheck system ? When's the last time we played the sens for 2 straight games totalling 74 shots with relenteless offensive pressure ? Usually it's the other way around.. Even in the playoffs when we had a goalie to bail us out from total defensive self-destruction..

We did not see this under Quinn.. We have a coach now who follows trends around the league and implements a system that best helps the team succeed. Which is very refreshing for a change ..

The leafs have good defensive centers (Sundin, Peca etc) to allow the wingers to ATTACK the offensive zone with abandon.. When's the last time the leafs forwards have caused so many turnovers in the offensive side of the ice ? The Sens were turning the puck over left, right and center. And it was because of the 2 man forecheck system Maurice has instilled in this team..

Couple the two-man forecheck with a much stronger defense, and mobile defensemen who can retrieve and control the puck well after picking up the turnovers caused by the forwards, and the leafs will be a much tougher team to play against.. So far, I am liking what I am seeing from the coaching staff on down to the waterboy ...

It was also a delight to see a leaf head coach instructing his players and communicating with his troops during a game when situations on the ice changed (such as a penalty or a game changing momentum play) .. Unlike before when we had a coach do Nothing when the momentum was changing in a game but chew gum and look at the camera befuddled.

It is refreshing to say the least .. Let's see if this development and strategy stays effective.. Which I think it will because the players are definitely buying into this new system we are seeing.. It is a much MUCH more entertaining product on the ice out there compared to what we witnessed last season..

what I love about this new strategy (and system) is it makes the leafs very hard to play against.. Opposing defenseman have to be VERY alert because they have 2 forecheckers barreling down on them all game long..

That's not easy..

It will be harder for teams to just stroll their way into our zone like they used to do consistently.. They have to think about how to get the puck out of their own end first !

we have the right kind of team to have an effective 2-man forecheck.. The make-up of the team is perfect for it.

#1. We have good defensive centers to cover defensively for the rushing wingers.. Sundin, Peca, Stajan, even Pohl is terrific defensively.

#2. We have good mobile defensemen with good puck handling skills to retrieve and control the pucks caused by the wingers creating the turnovers..

Maurice is definitely onto something here..
