Mats Sundin

Captain Mats is one of the games biggest 1st line power forwards ever to have graced an nhl ice surfice.Sudden Sundin is a durable elite forward who has an excellent package of size strength and finese. He uses his reach to a degree that it is very hard to get the puck from him. Is extremely slick, loves to find the holes and has a wide variety of shots. Consistency is the name of his game. His shot is feared because of its accuracy. He is used in all game situations power play pently killing and is a great faceoffman especially when the game is on the line.Mats Sundin has gone on to become an ambassador for Swedish sport, unarguably one of the most popular Swedish sportsmen ever. But there was a time when Mats Sundin was banned from Swedish hockey. There was even a time when controversial Swedish Ice Hockey Association boss Rickard Fagerlund promised he'd see to it that Mats Sundin never again played in a blue and yellow jersey because mats left sweden for the nhl. That was a decade and three World Championships ago. In 1991 in Helsinki, in 1992 in Prague and in 1998 in Zurich, Sundin led the proud Tre Kronor to gold medals in competition with the best the world could offer. He bettered that in 2005 winning a Hockey Gold Medal for his country. After winning the Swedish title with Djurgarden and competing successfully with Tre Kronor in the Bern World Championship, Sundin left for North America without further notice in the summer of 1990. At that point, he had become one of the all-time greats in Swedish hockey. Only two players besides Sundin have won three World Championships, Jonas Bergqvist of Leksand and the legendary Sven Tumba, a 1950s and 1960s star with Sundin's Djurgarden.- Legends of HockeyMats started to play in the NHL on a young quebec nordique squad in the early 1990's.After being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994 , the young Swede became a smashing success. In just one year he rose to stardom in a city well known for its taste for fine hockey and fighting spirit. He won the honor of being named the team's captain, the first foreign captain in the history of the Maple Leafs. A member of Sweden's Olympic Team in 1998 and again in 2002, Sundin has represented his homeland in international competition a total of eleven times as of the 2002-03 season. In 2002-03, he became the first Swedish born player to reach 1,000 points at the NHL level, continuing his productive ways on the ice for the Leafs in 2003-04, leading the team in scoring for the 10th time. 05-06 Mats suffered asevere eye injury but returned to play 12 games later. When he returned he dawn a visor but hsi game was subpar and wasn't the pre-lockout player leaf fans had know. Mats was enduring the worse season of his career before the Olympics. He teamed up with Forsberg Alfredsson and Lidstrom and won the Hockey Gold for Sweden. In Sweden it is rumored that he started using a Synergy stick given to him by Alfredsson and started to tear up the league.Since the Olympics, Sundin has 18 goals and 15 assists inlcuding nine-game point streak as the surging Leafs challenge for a playoff berth till the 2nd last game of the 05-06 season. In his 18th season he is as dominant now as he was when he first came to the leafs some 14 seasons ago. Mats has never been flanked by top line talent on his line. He always centered past prime free agent gap players who were good enough to be propped up by Mats ability to make other players appear better then they were.Mats has had a long sucessful career despite MSLE pursuit of the allmighty dollar instead of Stanley Cups but in the eyes of leaf fans Mats is a winner on and off the ice.
